SOUTH KITSAP ? The name of a 40-year-old man who died Thursday after being pulled unconscious from Long Lake has been released.

Edward Joseph Pettit of Lakewood was swimming with friends about 30 yards from shore when he became distressed and sank beneath the surface. Friends and bystanders were unable to save him.

Witnesses say Pettit was under the water for 10 to 12 minutes before he was located and brought to shore.

The official cause and manner of death will be released once toxicology results have been finalized, said Deputy Scott Wilson, spokesman for the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office.
